A new report reveals that nearly a third of media providers supporting content production and distribution are susceptible to compromise via vulnerabilities discovered in their publicly available and internet-accessible fingerprints.
NEW YORK, August 22, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — blue indicatora leading cyber defense company, today released the findings of a new report, “Media Industry Cybersecurity Challenges: A Vendor Ecosystem AnalysisThe research found that 30% of media providers are susceptible to compromise through vulnerabilities discovered in their publicly available online presence. These critical vulnerabilities are known to be exploitable by malicious actors.
The media ecosystem is one of the most complex, making it difficult for businesses to securely produce, distribute and manage content. From concept to camera and camera to consumer, media companies depend on vendors, service providers, partners and technology. Exploitation of found vulnerabilities can lead to potential loss of content and operational disruption.
BlueVoyant undertook this research to raise awareness of the cyber defense challenges facing media companies and to help the industry better defend against attacks. The research was carried out using BlueVoyant Pitch: 3PR™ (Third-Party Cyber Risk Management). The platform identifies corporate Internet software vulnerabilities and other exploitable opportunities with techniques similar to those used by external cyber attackers while profiling potential targets.
The study was conducted by Joel Molinoffvice president of BlueVoyant and former executive vice president and chief information officer of CBS Corporation, and Dan VasileVice President of Strategic Development at BlueVoyant and former Vice President of Information Security at Paramount.
“The media industry faces many cybersecurity challenges — from content leaks that directly impact revenue, to cyberattacks on distribution channels and ransomware,” Molinoff said. “The report shows that vendors in the media industry are more susceptible to compromise than vendors in other industries. The upside is that the media industry can take proactive steps to improve its cyber defense posture.”
Other key findings from the survey include:
- The percentage of media providers likely to be compromised is double that of a multi-industry benchmark composed of all companies tracked by BlueVoyant
- Half of the most common media vendors providing content management solutions have been identified with potentially compromising vulnerabilities
- Timely patching is a significant issue for the media industry, with 60% of identified vulnerable systems still unprotected six weeks after a patch is released.
“The digital supply chain is a common attack vector not just for media, but for all industries,” Vasile said. “In order to improve their cyber defense posture, media companies must continuously monitor their extended vendor ecosystem, using analytics to prioritize mitigation of the most critical outcomes.”
BlueVoyant is hosting a webinar at 10 a.m. ET/ 15:00 BST/ 4:00 p.m. CET on Thursday, September 8 further discuss the findings of the report and answer questions. Current customers, security professionals and other parties are encouraged to attend by registering here.
