NEW DELHI: The TMC on Thursday expressed solidarity with the fraternity of journalists on the issue of restricted access to Parliament and called for the immediate restoration of all media facilities to cover the debates.
In a statement, the party condemned the move, saying such restriction was against the spirit of democracy.
“The Chief Minister of Bengal and the President of the All India Trinamool Congress, Ms. Mamata Banerjee, as well as the entire parliamentary party of the Trinamool Congress wish to express our full solidarity with the fraternity of journalists on the issue of restricted access to the parliament.
“Parliament is the heart of our democracy and reporting for it is a cherished democratic tradition. Free and strong media are the soul of a parliamentary democracy. The right to freedom of expression, expression and thought are the foundations of a dynamic democracy ”It said.
The party called for the immediate return of all facilities to journalists to cover Parliament so that the institution is strengthened.
“India ranks 142nd in the world press freedom rankings out of 180 countries. It goes even further. Just a few years ago we were 136th, now 142. the other reasons for the drop in the global ranking index.
Let us work together to ensure that in this 75th year of our independence, the free spirit of an independent media is not controlled in any way, “the party said in a statement.
