Parents angry at response to Uvalde shooting, NRA moves forward
The grief was compounded by anger as more details emerged of Tuesday’s shooting. The school had planned for such a scenario, even going so far as to use armed security. But the shooter “entered unimpeded” through an unlocked door and continued his killing spree for more than an hour. As police officials defended their soldiers, one father lamented, “It could have been over in minutes. Meanwhile, the National Rifle Association has announced that its annual convention will be held in Texas this weekend. Former President Donald Trump, Governor Greg Abbott and Senator Ted Cruz are scheduled to speak. (Source: NYT, The hill)

Russia launches attacks on all fronts in eastern Ukraine
Yesterday Russian artillery struck Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, for the first time in a week, killing at least nine people, including a baby. Russian forces continued their bombardment of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk and there were reports of three explosions at Dnipro overnight. “They want to burn the Donbass,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a rhythmic nighttime address, “to make it uninhabitable.” More than three months after the invasion, Ukraine is clearly feeling the heat. But the British Ministry of Defense says Russia is also become desperate: They recently deployed 50-year-old tanks that are “particularly vulnerable to anti-tank weapons.” (Source: BBC, The Guardian)

124 Fahrenheit: A Pakistani town offers a glimpse into a hellish future
Jacobabad has always been one of the hottest cities in the world, but the heat usually starts in late May, not March like this year. The combination of fewer trees and less water – and the fact that scientists say climate change has made heat waves in the region 30 times more frequent – has led activist Mohammad Shaaban to worry that “in the next few years, Jacobabad will not be able to house humans and animals. Workers have to endure 12-14 hour days and heatstroke is commonplace. Those who can afford it are moving away from the city during the summer (Sources: The Guardian, NYT)

Blinken outlines US strategy on China in long-awaited speech
“We are not looking for a conflict or a new cold war. On the contrary, we are determined to avoid both,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a 45 minute speech covering US-China relations. The United States will not prevent China from developing its economy or meddling in its political system, but it will “defend and reform the rules-based international order – the system of laws, agreements, principles and of institutions that the world has come together to build…to prevent conflict, to uphold the rights of all,” Blinken said. His speech coincided with the Chinese Foreign Minister’s tour of the island countries of the Peaceful. (Source: Reuters)

Lasers reveal ancient urban centers under the Amazon
For decades, mysterious mounds in the southwest corner of the Amazon basin have baffled experts. Now, thanks to remote sensing technology who mapped the terrain from the air, they have an answer. 1,500 years ago, Amazonians lived in densely populated settlements surrounded by miles of elevated roads and punctuated by 70-foot earth pyramids. Researchers previously thought that all Amazonians lived in small nomadic tribes that left negligible traces. “This is the first clear evidence that there were urban societies in this part of the Amazon basin,” said Jonas Gregorio de Souza, an archaeologist at Spain’s Pompeu Fabra University. He was doing what he loved. The field of dreams and Killing them softly The star died in her sleep in the Dominican Republic while filming a movie. ‘How to Murder Your Husband’ Author Found Guilty of…
…killing her 63-year-old chef husband, Daniel Brophy, at his workplace in Portland, Oregon. Nancy Crampton Brophy’s gruesome trial 2011 opens: “As a writer of romantic suspense, I spend a lot of time thinking about murder and, therefore, police procedure. Fans auction fake noses from vandalized Ibrahimović statue
Talk about cutting off your nose to upset your face. Angry football fans in Malmö, Sweden, are selling three replica noses modeled after a statue of his hometown’s late hero Zlatan Ibrahimović. The statue was vandalized – a nose, leg and toe removed in separate incidents – after the star acquired a stake in Stockholm rival Hammarby in 2019 and pledged to transform it in the biggest club in Scandinavia. The proceeds from the sale of the noses “will go for purposes which promote the work against modern, commercial football, where the love of clubs and the sport is at the centre”. (Source: Reuters)
